20 CORP AMERICA / MARCH 2017 , Dr. Brian Freed is Executive Director of ClinImmuneLabs, recently named Healthcare Pioneer of the Year – 2016. He tells us about the work the organisation does and the success it has enjoyed to date. Innovative Immunology ClinImmune Labs is a business owned by the University of Colorado that performs lab services such as HLA typing for organ transplantation, collection and processing of Cord Blood, and development of cell therapies. Dr. Brian Freed is a Professor of Medicine and Immunology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He tells us a little about his background and his current position. “I began my career at Albany Medical College where I received my PhD in Immunology,” he begins. “After coming to the University of Colorado in 1997 I took over as Executive Director and Founder of ClinImmune Labs. In 2002 ClinImmune Labs acquired the cord blood bank from University of Colorado Hospital. The HLA lab and cord blood bank form the core of ClinImmune’s business.” Innovation and developing novel approaches in cellular therapies is a high priority to ClinImmune Labs as well as the leadership of the University, and this is how it differentiates itself within the sector. The organization seeks to diversify its service lines while also innovating new approaches to the way cell therapies can be used to treat patients. ClinImmune Labs has experienced an average of 11% growth over the past 15 years and continues to expand in terms of laboratory and cleanroom space as well as in revenue and staff. Brian highlights an example of innovation and stellar performance within the company. “The launch of the use of Mesenchymal Stem Cell therapy for the treatment of chronic wounds is at the top of the list of the exciting new ways we are diligently working to bring better therapies to those in need. “The novel concepts we are working on presently could change the way some diseases are treated. By focusing more on cell therapies we hope to move the needle slightly away from the treatment of diseases just with pharmaceuticals to more curative procedures using cells derived from multiple sources.” ClinImmune’s staff has been a major factor in the success the organisation has had to date, and will continue to be critical in the future, as Brian explains further. “Due to the nature of medicine and the need to prove the safety and effectiveness of any new treatment, we have a relatively large staff that operates in many arenas. From regulatory, to bioinformatics, to business support, to the technicians and managers who oversee and perform the critical functions of laboratory work, ClinImmune’s success would not be possible without its extremely talented and dedicated staff.” Medicine is always a challenging environment in which to work and Brian and his team strive to do the best possible job and get the best possible outcomes for clients and staff. “As new therapies are developed we expect the challenges to be numerous but the reward in terms of improving the lives of patients will make any challenge we face worthwhile.” K Company: ClinImmune Labs at the University of Colorado Name: Dr. Brian Freed, PhD Email: [email protected] Web Address: www.clinimmune.com Address: 12705 E.
