Corp America March 2017

56 CORP AMERICA / MARCH 2017 , Webspace CEO, MatthewHellinger, talks to Corporate America about the firmand how it is always ahead of the curve with regards to changing technologies. One Step Ahead Webspace, Inc., formerly Webspace Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 2000. It started as a custom web design company and quickly became a web development firm focused on E-commerce and application security. Today the firm is able to offer its clients a comprehensive suite of services to complement businesses doing between $1-50MM in annual website revenue. Webspace, Inc. is a member of the i2Coalition, an advocacy group for an unencumbered Internet, and OWASP, the open web application security project. Matthew Hellinger is chief executive officer of Webspace, a role he has held since the company’s inception, and his responsibilities includes managing business relationships and charting the direction of the company. He also oversees new customer on-boarding and security procedures. Matthew is one step ahead when it comes to keeping up with emerging industry trends, especially as he states the past 12 months have seen rapid change within the sector. “In this industry, technology is moving extremely fast and keeping up is vital. Over the past 17 years, there have been substantial industry shifts that we must stay on top of, but even on a month-by-month basis, web technologies change. Often the biggest challenge isn’t shifting to a particular new technology, but choosing which new technologies merit a shift and which represent a substantial risk to customers. “I personally attend several industry events each year in order to keep up-to-date. This is an opportunity to get feedback from peers and discover market trends that may not be public knowledge. There is a lot of noise on the Internet and interacting with a professional group of peers is the easiest way to decipher what trends merit attention. “My aspirations tend to focus on objectives for the company itself, though I do also speak at industry events each year.” It is this keen attention to detail and focus on research that ensures Matthew and the Webspace team produce innovative products and services that standout as best-sellers in the marketplace and helps set the firm apart from competitors. “At Webspace, Inc, we focus on quality over quantity. Many in our industry focus on low cost volume solutions, but that approach has largely been a race to the bottom. Increasingly we see that software-as-a- service (SaaS) is the most direct path to meeting a particular market need and we have been investing in SaaS solutions to address mature markets, like E-commerce and social media.” Matthew’s approach to staff management also focuses on quality over quantity, as he embellishes. “Identifying qualified employees is relatively easy, but the key to long-term success is identifying employees with a solid work ethic. It’s generally true that you are better off identifying smart employees with a quality work ethic and teaching them what they need to know than to find employees based strictly on qualifications and trying to change a bad work ethic.” With regards to the future of Webspace and the industry, Matthew foresees a continuation of great service. “We will continue to be a trusted consultancy as technologies and regulations change. Three years from now will mark our 20 year anniversary. In that time, the Internet has changed dramatically. We expect that it will continue to be increasingly regulated and that this will present challenges for new businesses and opportunities for us to help.” K Company: Webspace, Inc.
